  1. There's a wide demographic of cyclists, some of whom enjoy the additional stats of wattage and power output. However, you can get a great workout without measuring your wattage or rpm's. A simple indoor bike would work great for just cycling at home. The Schwinn IC4 is a good option.

  2. We do not list an age category because any piece of equipment can be suitable for individuals in any age group. While older individuals may often prefer a recumbent bike or elliptical, this is not always the case. I have a 70 year old neighbor who can out-row people half his age. We do however, list features that may make a certain piece of equipment preferable for specific individuals such as cushioning, low step-up height, and ease to get on and off.

  3. Sole treadmills can last 10 years or more. Place your treadmill indoors in a temperature controlled room (as opposed to a garage or basement) and lubricate the belt every three months or so. This will help extend the life of the treadmill and reduce the risk of issues.

  4. In our experience, Nordictrack treadmills feature some of the best cushioning on the market and have a very user-friendly console. However, if you are looking for something simple and affordable, there are other options that will provide great training. Horizon treadmills, Sole treadmills, and the ProForm line are all good options.

  5. Pets, like small children, may not understand the nature of exercise equipment and could be injured if they try to play with you while you're on the machine. If possible, secure your pets behind a gate or in another room while you exercise.

  6. We recommend caution when looking at budget treadmills. Those priced under $1000 tend to be less stable and less durable than higher priced models. One of our recommendations for best budget treadmill is the Sole F63 which is priced around $1000 and is very stable and well-built. You can find lower priced treadmills, the Horizon T101 is a popular model, but we do hear more complaints about durability issues on lower-end models.

  7. That's debatable. Some physiologists believe that with the proper form, rowing should not affect your sciatica. However, other professionals recommend those with sciatica or low back pain avoid rowing as an exercise. We'd recommend checking with your healthcare professional for better insight on recommended exercises. A rower may work great - but it's worth a visit to make sure.

  8. Honestly, you can lose weight using any treadmill. Weight loss occurs when energy expenditure is greater than energy intake. If you increase your calories burned by walking or running on a treadmill, while maintaining or slightly reducing your daily calories consumed, you'll be able to lose weight. However, some treadmills offer more features to stimulate calorie burn faster - if you walk on an incline it burns more calories than walking on a flat road for the same amount of time. One of my favorite treadmills is the Nordictrack x22i. It has steep incline options and lots of training content on iFit. You can easily replace a gym membership if you use all the features available through iFit on the x22i. The 22" touchscreen is great and I love the exceptional incline/decline options. The Sole F85 is another fun option that now includes a touchscreen as well.

  9. The rollers don't affect the cushioning as much as impact the overall functionality of the belt. Larger rollers have a larger surface area, so they are able to grab the belt and move it along with less friction. You'll notice more expensive treadmills tend to have larger rollers. The cushioning is based more on the composite structure of the deck and rebound system designed to absorb impact. The Sole F80 does have more cushioning than the Sole F63.

  10. The Nordictrack x22i or x32i are the most cushioned treadmills we've used - but they're also expensive and don't fold up. If you need something that folds, check out Nordictrack's Commercial line for a few models that include generous cushioning. The 1750, 2450 and 2950 are all good options as well. The Bowflex T10 and T22 both feature nice cushioning as well.
