Once again, Peloton is recalling some of its equipment. This time, the original Peloton Bike. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, around 2.2 million bikes have been recalled as of Thursday, May 11th, 2023. The issue is reportedly the seat post of the Peloton Bike.

The seat post holds the saddle and is adjustable horizontally and vertically depending on the user’s height. There have been 35 reports as of April 30th, 2023, of the seat post breaking causing users to fall during their ride. CPSC stated that there have been “13 reports of injuries including a fractured wrist, lacerations, and bruises due to falling from the bike”.

Peloton Recalls Over 2 Million Bikes

This isn’t Peloton’s first recall. Pedals on the Peloton Bike were recalled years ago, as well as the brand’s first treadmill, the Peloton Tread+, which was recalled after numerous injuries and the death of a small child.

Is My Peloton Bike Recalled?

Models of the original Peloton Bike that were sold at Peloton, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Amazon in the United States from January 2018 through May 2023 with the model number PL-01 have been recalled.

To check if your bike has been recalled, look for the model number on the inside of the front fork near the flywheel. The forks extend up from the front stabilizer on either side of the flywheel for reference.

Peloton said that they would be emailing all owners of Peloton Bikes, including the premium Peloton Bike+ which wasn’t included in the recall. You could also see an alert on your bike’s screen if your machine was affected. If you’re unsure we recommend checking the model number and contacting Peloton.

What Should I Do If My Peloton Bike Is Recalled?

If your Peloton Bike is one of the over 2 million bikes recalled, you should stop using it and contact Peloton. Peloton says they’ll send a free replacement seat post to consumers with a recalled bike to fix themselves.

Replacing the seat post with the new one is pretty straightforward and shouldn’t be a problem for most people. Peloton also posted this video demonstrating how to properly swap out the seat post of the Peloton Bike.

It is said that the welding in the seat post is the problem. It is unclear whether this has anything to do with Peloton selling rusted exercise bikes in the past.
