My favorite running joke on social media is that if you ask a runner to wear their most expensive outfit, they won’t put on formal attire or luxury brand clothing. If you ask a runner to put on their most expensive outfit, they will put on running clothes and all their running tech. I’m almost ashamed of how much more affordable the XTERRA TR150 is than my daily running outfit.

It’s not just me. Even new walkers and runners might have a GPS watch or fitness tracker and a nice pair of shoes, and that’s already near enough to the XTERRA TR150’s low, low price. But wait, if the XTERRA TR150 is that affordable, is it really a good treadmill, or are you better off saving up for a higher-end machine?

Running on treadmills is my job, but I put in a lot of mileage outdoors, too. If you are primarily an outdoor walker or runner, it might not make sense to drop a couple grand on a top treadmill. Read our review of the XTERRA TR150 to decide if you should save or upgrade.

While we haven’t gotten the TR150 into our studio (yet), we put its sister machine, the TRX1000, to the test. We were impressed with XTERRA’s performance and durability. The main features that concern us about the TRX1000 are the same as the TR150. The small running surface, thin treadmill deck, and underpowered motor were worth investigating.

No matter how well the TR150 performs, we can’t recommend it for marathon training. It’s not built for intense use. Yet, it is great for walking and as a backup for runners who primarily train outside. You have to be more cognizant of where your feet land and use a short running stride, too. Considering the 250-lb weight capacity, the TR150 is better for smaller exercisers.

Before you decide on this treadmill, you’ll want to learn more about its features. We like it for easy indoor runs and walking. The construction is also suitable for active seniors. To find out what else we loved and what we didn’t, continue reading below!

What We Like
  • Affordable, compact, and lightweight.
  • The deck folds up to save space and has transportation wheels for moving.
  • There are onboard workout programs that don’t require a subscription to use.
  • Xterra backs the frame with an impressive lifetime warranty.
  • There are quick-touch buttons to adjust the speed conveniently.
Areas for Improvement
  • Not suitable for most runners and heavy use.
  • There is no Bluetooth connectivity in the console.
  • The incline function is manual, with only three settings.

We Would Eat, Sleep, and Breathe Treadmills, But They Taste Terrible

Full disclaimer: We haven’t actually eaten any treadmills despite Kaleigh having a close call after accidentally pulling the safety key on one of them. However, we have seriously contemplated taking a nap on them after hard workouts.

Our team is really serious about treadmills. We go further than walking and running on them. We also measure and quantify every aspect of them that we can. We are obsessed. I mean, who else goes on vacation and excitedly shares the highlights of the hotel’s cardio equipment with their coworkers when they return? It might be just us.

We are fitness experts, runners, walkers, coaches…treadmill connoisseurs if you will.

Editor’s Note 6/26/2024: We updated our XTERRA TR150 review with a handy new comparison chart and new information after testing another XTERRA machine.

Dimensions/Storability

The TR150 only weighs 97 lbs which is very lightweight for a treadmill. It has transportation wheels and a foldable deck, so we imagine it is easy to move around. The fact that it folds makes it ideal for users who have limited space.

Its dimensions are only 63.4″ L x 28.75″ W x 51.4″ H unfolded. If you fold up the deck, it is 28.5″ L x 28.75″ W x 61″ H. The height of the console makes it super easy to see a TV if you have one in your exercise space.

Onboard Workouts & Apps

Preprogrammed Workouts

The Xterra TR150 Treadmill offers some onboard workouts. There are 12 preset speed programs. On the console, each of the programs gives you a good idea of what they entail because of the picture below the program number. These programs have preset speed levels and each picture indicates how the speed will change throughout the workout.

Onboard workouts like these are commonly found on treadmills, especially those at this price point. All of the other treadmills in Xterra’s lineup also include onboard workouts. The TR150 isn’t Bluetooth enabled for connecting to third-party apps, like other treadmills from Xterra, though.

Console

The console on the Xterra TR150 has a lot of functionality. The 5″ LCD display shows workout metrics such as time, speed, program, distance, calories, and pulse. Keep in mind that it isn’t a touch screen, and it’s not backlit, so you’ll need lights on in your home to see the screen. We also don’t recommend using a treadmill in the dark, so yeah, turn on your lights regardless.

By looking at it, I like the layout of the console. The screen is centered at the top of the console, with a row of quick-touch speeds underneath. These are beneficial for adjusting the speed quickly. For instance, when you press the number 6, the belt will adjust to 6 mph. Quick-touch buttons make using a treadmill easy and convenient. I love not having to think when I’m training.

Below these buttons is a device rack to place your phone, tablet, or maybe a book. By the looks of it, there is a lip to help keep your item in place. This allows you to choose your own adventure when it comes to entertainment while using the Xterra TR150. The only thing to keep in mind when placing your device on the rack is that it will most likely cover the screen.

I really like how intuitive the programs are because of the images. The images aren’t buttons, though, so you will have to navigate them by pressing the program button in the middle of the console. The cupholders do look small. Eyeing my Stanley Cup next to me, I doubt it would fit. A small water bottle might, though.

XTERRA+

XTERRA+ is an app you can access from your phone or tablet. You create an account and enter your treadmill model number to gain access to hundreds of trainer-led studio classes. It is the same as the Sole+ app (in case you’ve already come across that app in your research).

This app is entirely free. You are not obligated to use it at all. I enjoy it because it adds more variety to my workouts, but I also like watching entertainment on my phone or tablet instead.

Build Quality

Frame

The Xterra TR150 Treadmill is compact and lightweight. Something to keep in mind with a treadmill of this size and in this price range is that it isn’t suitable for heavy use or running. The TR150 only handles users up to 250 lbs.

Motor

This Xterra treadmill has a 2.25 HP motor. In our experience testing treadmills, we anticipate that the TR150 will be best for mainly walking. 3.0 HP motors are typically the smallest that we recommend for running. We don’t recommend running or heavier use on this model. Heavy use, in this case, would be 5+ miles a day and/or using the treadmill at the highest speeds often.

The Xterra TR150 goes up to 10 mph, which is a high speed for most users. We don’t recommend using the treadmill at this speed very frequently. The TR150 has a manual incline option with three levels. This means that you have to adjust the incline with a pin when you’re off the treadmill. While not the most convenient, having an incline function is beneficial for training.

Treadmill Deck

In addition to the motor size, we also assess the deck size when determining what kind of use a treadmill is appropriate for. The Xterra TR150 has a 16″ wide by 50″ long deck. This size deck should be fine for walking. Some users with short running strides might be able to jog slowly. Know that the TR150 is best suited for primarily walking though.

Warranty & Customer Service

We are impressed that Xterra offers a lifetime warranty for the TR150 frame. This indicates a nice build. Xterra also includes a 1-year warranty for the motor and 90 days for the deck, parts, and in-home labor.

Should You Buy the XTERRA TR150

The Xterra TR150 Treadmill is the most affordable treadmill in Xterra’s lineup. Users can shop this model on Amazon for well under $1000. It’s a great budget pick and a good walking treadmill. The deck folds up to save space when you’re not using it, too.

We anticipate that users will enjoy the straightforward, functional console while walking on the deck. Users with shorter stride lengths might be able to lightly jog on it as well. Keep in mind that this isn’t a treadmill that you’d prep for a long-distance race on, but it’s a nice, budget-friendly, compact option.

XTERRA TR150 Q&A / FAQ

Can you run on the XTERRA TR150?

Some runners can run on the XTERRA TR150. We recommend running at a slow pace. It is not ideal for HIIT workouts. The deck is only 16 inches wide and 50 inches long, so use caution. The TR150 is best for easy runs on rainy days.

What is the weight limit on the XTERRA TR150?

The TR150 has a 250-lb weight limit. It is not best for larger exercisers due to the thinness of the deck (15 mm) and the size of the deck (16″ x 50″).

How do you incline the XTERRA TR150?

The TR150 uses a manual incline. You cannot change the incline during a workout. With the treadmill off, you can fold the deck and unpin the plastic incline level on either side of the deck. The manual incline changes very minimally.

Does XTERRA make a good treadmill?

XTERRA makes good treadmills for their price. We like XTERRA treadmills because of their compact and lightweight designs. They have a lifetime warranty on their frames. Most XTERRA treadmills are not good for larger exercisers and heavy use.
