We Want to Help You Find the Best Rower for 2025

We know rowing athletes have strong feelings about their preferred rowing machine. We do, too! The tricky thing about rowing machines is that there are multiple types of resistance, each with pros and cons. What works best for one setting may not work as well for another.

We rigorously tested each machine and compiled a list that we were happy with. More importantly, we think you will be happy with any of the machines featured on this list.

Why You Should Trust Us

Rowing is an excellent workout that has become even more accessible at home. At Treadmill Review Guru, we know there are many rowers out there, and it can be overwhelming to determine which one is perfect for you.

During our review process, we test every component on each rower that we can get our hands on to inform you how it works and how it compares to others on the market. Ultimately, we conduct these reviews to help you take home the best rowing machine.

Editors Note: (3/14/2025) We updated this list to reflect further testing of each rowing machine, updates to the rowing machine models, and additions to the content available on some rowing machines.

Areas For Improvement:
  • Subscription required
  • No screen adjustments
The Hydrow Wave makes indoor rowing more accessible because of its compact, lightweight frame and affordable price tag. For a well-constructed rower with a touchscreen, the Hydrow Wave is the best value compared to other rowing machines, and it’s because of its subscription content, design, and price that we’ve named it the best rowing machine overall on this list of best rowers.

The Hydrow Wave’s 16” touchscreen displays the best rowing content. A Hydrow subscription has live and on-demand trainer-led workouts filmed outdoors on the water. You’ll receive valuable form feedback and tips from professional rowers. It also keeps you engaged, entertained, and motivated while you row.

In addition to great content, the Hydrow Wave is a very well-designed rower with comfortable features and great functionality. The Wave has a nicely cushioned handle, adjustable foot pedals, and a lightly padded and contoured seat. It feels comfortable and looks nice.

The Hydrow Wave is a magnetic rower with an adjustable drag factor on the screen to change the feel of the stroke. The drag factor ranges from 50 to 300, providing plenty of resistance for strong rowers. The Hydrow Wave’s resistance is quiet. It has a belt drive system that connects the flywheel to the handle for a smooth stroke. We’re impressed with the tension strength.

We love that the Hydrow Wave only weighs 102 lbs. It doesn’t fold in half but can be stored upright when you purchase a vertical anchor separately. We recommend checking out the Hydrow Wave if you’re looking for top-notch rowing content on an affordable rowing machine that’s comfortable and well-constructed.

  • Unlimited air resistance
Areas For Improvement:
  • Loud performance
  • Narrow seat

There’s a reason the Concept2 is the most popular rower in the world: It is a solid, reliable, well-built rower that offers a consistent, smooth rowing drive. Concept2 rowers support heavy use in commercial and residential settings. This fan rower is simple, effective, lightweight, and our pick for the best air rower.

The Concept2 uses air resistance, which means the resistance is created entirely by the pull strength of the user. In other words, no matter how hard you pull, the Concept2 will be able to match your strength. It is the ideal training machine–always up for any challenge!

Appropriate ergonomics and functional engineering are paramount for a rower since it is so easy to develop poor form. The supportive aluminum track holds rowers securely without bowing in the drive or release. The C2 has a 14-inch frame height, powder-coated matte finish, and nickel-plated chain. It is available in black or gray.

The angled footboards and adjustable pedal clips support any size athletic shoe while the velcro straps hold your foot in place during each stroke. The handle and rowing cord are just the right height, so you can pull the cord to your chest and lean backward for a full, uninhibited rowing stroke. The seat also slides back far enough to fully extend your legs.

The PM5 display switches on automatically when you start rowing. The LCD screen displays calories, strokes per minute, distance, time, etc. There are multiple onboard programs. Our favorite is the ‘race boat,’ where you compete against a boat on the screen. It helps you avoid zoning out or lagging in your pace.

The Hydrow Pro Rower is a solid choice for your home. The Pro’s 22” touchscreen showcases rowing videos, including outdoor on-the-water rowing routes, guidance on good rowing form, training videos, and online support. The Hydrow platform connects people via teams, competitions, a Leaderboard, and other features to create a rowing community.

The Hydrow is priced at over $2000 but is well worth it. As the best high-end rower on this best rowing machine list, Hydrow brings rowing into the homes of exercisers who recognize the benefits but may need guidance and engaging content to stay committed.

The Hydrow Pro is a quiet magnetic rower, making it a good option for those concerned about noise. It has a belt rather than a chain drive, which reduces noise and requires less maintenance. Both the handle and the seat are impressively comfortable. We tested this next to several other rowers and found the Hydrow to be the most comfortable, which makes it easy to use for longer rowing sessions.

The 22” touchscreen at the front of the Hydrow is well-positioned so you can see it while maintaining good form. The neck of the Hydrow is about 2” higher than the Concept2, which makes it easy to sit upright and not round your shoulders when leaning down to the catch. The screen itself is crisp, bright, and easy to see. You can reach the icons on the screen from the seat, so you don’t have to remove your feet from the straps.

The NordicTrack RW900 is our most versatile home rower because it has thousands of trainer-led classes with iFIT. You can row at home while enjoying sights from places like the Thames River. Then, pivot the screen and take a yoga class in Hawaii! The NordicTrack RW900 rower is great for perfecting your technique with support from rowing professionals.

The 22” full-color touchscreen on the RW900 is crisp with clear graphics and bright resolution.
NordicTrack includes iFIT’s rowing classes and routes for free for the first month with the purchase of the RW900. iFIT automatically adjusts the magnetic resistance so you can concentrate on your workout without pressing a bunch of buttons.

The RW900 rower’s design was updated last year. The rail sits about 15” off the floor. The contoured and sweat-resistant seat measures 12” x 10”. The RW900 can be stored upright when it’s not in use. Wheels under the front stabilizer allow you to roll it around as needed.

If you choose not to subscribe to iFIT, you can train in manual mode. This screen shows your 500m split/average, watts, calories burned, strokes, elapsed time, and distance. A 400m oval shows on the screen with a blue progress bar filling the white space as you progress through a lap. Without iFIT, you manually control the resistance onscreen.

The NordicTrack RW900 shines when paired with iFIT. Non-subscribers can still use this magnetic rower but should be mindful of the reduced features.

The Aviron Strong is also a solid rowing machine but is lightweight at only 114 lbs. It rolls around and can be stored vertically. The Strong’s seat is positioned pretty high, so it’s easy to get on and off. At its height, it almost feels like sitting on a chair. The Aviron Strong Rower also has an excellent weight capacity of 507 lb.

The Aviron Strong is a hybrid rower with air and magnetic resistance. The resistance has 16 levels, and the fan flywheel increases tension the more powerfully you row. This rower is great for users of all levels. We love this hybrid rower’s unique design and engaging content. We highly recommend checking out the Aviron if you want to ditch boring rower workouts forever.

The Aviron Strong Series Rower has four-way adjustable foot pedals and the option to purchase accessories like lumbar-back support and a remote handle to adjust the resistance. If you are worried about the seat being too firm, we recommend upgrading to the ultra-plush cloud seat. We love ours!

The NordicTrack RW700 Rower is similar to the RW900 rower but has a 10” touch screen. This screen tilts and pivots so you can view content while training on and off the rower. It uses iFIT, which is free for the first month.

iFIT has impressive virtual outdoor rowing where you can follow an instructor through beautiful lakes and rivers worldwide. iFIT’s rowing content is constantly growing as they add more classes that let you work on your form while getting a total body workout. iFIT makes for a very immersive experience on the RW700 Rower.

The RW700 is a magnetic rower, so it’s quiet and has 26 resistance levels. “Automatic Trainer Control” on iFIT lets you go hands-free by adjusting your resistance. You can bypass this at any time by changing the resistance on the touchscreen. Beginners and intermediates should find plenty of tension on the flywheel, but more advanced rowers might prefer a more challenging rower.

We love that the NordicTrack RW700 is extremely quiet. It is perfect for shared spaces like apartments and condos. It can also be stored upright and transported using the attached wheels. The new design is sleek yet functional. This rower is also great if you like to sit up higher off the ground while you row.

  • SpaveSaver folding design
  • iFIT compatible
  • Affordable price

Areas For Improvement:
  • Low catch position

The ProForm 750R Rower is a tablet-compatible rower with a digital backlit console. You can use the 750R with or without a tablet in the included device rack. A tablet allows you to connect to iFIT for trainer-led rowing workouts. Considering its functionality and tech, we’ve named the ProForm 750R Rower the most affordable tech-enhanced rower on this list.

The ProForm 750R rower has an ergonomic, molded seat on a steel rail. The padded handlebars are comfortable. The 750R is quieter because it uses a strap rather than a chain. The foot pedals are supportive and have a molded foot overlay on top. Adjustable nylon foot straps hold your feet securely. The foot pedals are adjustable and will accommodate any athletic shoe.

The flywheel is inertia-enhanced, so it spins smoothly. The 24 levels of magnetic resistance provide easily adjustable training options. Air resistance is significantly quieter and more easily adjustable with the 750R’s preset levels. You can row day or night on the 750R without disturbing those around you.

The console is a 5” backlit display with tactile buttons for scan, start/end, and resistance levels. The tablet rack overlaps the buttons but allows you to watch Netflix or any other app on your tablet. You can also use the integrated iFit app to sync with your machine for hundreds of classes and training options! The variety of iFIT classes makes it a valuable subscription.

The ProForm 750R folds. A handle below the catch lets you lift and fold it in half. Front-mounted transport wheels make it easy to roll. The 750R has a footprint of 22” wide by 86.5” deep by 45.5” high. It has a 250lb weight capacity. A 10-year frame and 1-year parts and labor warranty cover the 750R.

The ProForm Pro R10 Rower is a good option if you want a touchscreen. It has the same design and build as the 750R and comes free with a 3-year subscription to iFit.

What to Consider When Buying a Rower

There are several factors to consider when evaluating the best rower for you. Issues such as space and budget are probably first on your list, but then you should also consider the build and design of the rower, whether it contains a screen or console, and if you want subscription content. Below, we outline critical factors when evaluating a rower.

Frame Design

Most rowers feature a flywheel connected via a strap or chain to a handle. There is a seat that slides along a rail and foot pedals for your shoes.

One thing to consider is the height of the rail. Rowers, such as the Concept2, can be purchased with standard or tall legs for people needing a rower not too low to the ground. A taller rower makes it easier for users with mobility limitations to get on and off. When looking at rowers, consider how low they are to the ground and whether or not this would be an issue for you.

Resistance

There are three main types of resistance: air, water, and magnetic. There are also hydraulic rowers, which are inexpensive and do not meet the standards of most exercisers.

Air resistance responds to the power in the drive, so stronger rowers generate more resistance as they row. The resistance these rowers supply is unlimited, so they are great for athletes of all levels. However, air resistance flywheels are loud, making them impractical for some homes and apartments.

Comparatively, magnetic resistance is nearly silent when rowing. The resistance on a magnetic rower is not unlimited. Researching a magnetic rower is important to ensure it provides sufficient resistance for your skill level.

Water rowers are another type of resistance used on rowers. The sound of the rushing water as you pull is quieter and soothing. While water rowers don’t have dampers or resistance levels, rowing harder increases the resistance the water gives. You can also add or remove water from the tank, which may be impractical.

Some rowers are hybrids–usually a combination of air resistance and magnetic resistance. These are quieter than air resistance alone and provide a gentle cooling breeze while training. These rowers may be louder than water or magnetic-only rowers.

Handle and Chain

The handle is one of the most important features because it can drastically affect your rowing experience. The size and width of the handle affect how it feels in your hand. Most handles are cushioned for comfort, allowing you to row without getting sore hands or fingers.

The handle connects to the flywheel via a chain or belt. Chains are stronger, but they are also noisier. Belt drives are much quieter and often feel smoother through the pull, but they may wear out faster. However, belt drives typically require less maintenance (lubrication) than chain drives.

Footboards and Foot Stretchers

Most rowers have footboards that support the foot stretchers. The footboard is typically wider and longer than the stretcher for sufficient support. Most athletic shoe sizes should fit comfortably in rowing machine footboards and stretchers.

Foot stretchers are usually molded, with a ridge along the base and sides of the pedal to keep your foot secure. An adjustable strap crosses over the top of your foot to keep you fully locked in place. Many rowers have flexible foot stretchers that allow your heel to come off the board if necessary.

Seat

The best rowing seats are wide and ergonomically contoured. A comfortable and sweat-resistant material further improves the seat quality. Some rowers come with plush seats, while others allow you to upgrade to a premium option if desired.

Rail

The rail height determines how far you must lower your body to sit on the seat unless the seat has a tall base, like the Aviron Strong. Rails are typically between 14” – 20” in height, but some sit just an inch or so off the floor. Look for a smooth, sturdy rail that doesn’t flex in the middle or allow the seat to shift from side to side. Most rails are steel or aluminum.

Console or Screen

Traditional rowers have an LCD screen with multiple programs, but many newer rowers also feature a screen with subscription content. Some consoles have integrated tablet racks to hold a personal phone or tablet.

A simple digital console is sufficient for users trying to avoid subscriptions or row more casually. If you want programs and metrics, look for an upgraded LCD console. Screens are only necessary to access subscription content that provides instructional and motivational rowing programs.

Subscription Content

Many rowers offer subscription content to help you develop the proper rowing technique with outdoor and indoor rowing classes. Subscription content is beneficial for new or beginning rowers. Hydrow, iFIT, Aviron, and Ergatta subscriptions provide high-quality instruction that has helped us become better rowers. Still, deciding if the additional cost is worth it is up to you.

The Benefits of Rowing

Improves Overall Fitness

Rowing for as little as 15 minutes is a serious aerobic workout since it engages many muscle groups. Rowing requires breathing deeply and evenly while using your glute and core muscles to row through each stroke smoothly. Regularly rowing can increase your stamina and endurance while improving your cardiovascular health.

A Full-Body Workout

As mentioned above, rowing engages over 80% of your body’s muscles. Unlike other types of exercise equipment, rowing focuses on strengthening all your major muscle systems and doesn’t exclusively isolate lower body muscles only (I’m looking at you, spin bike).

Correct rowing form begins with your legs, specifically your glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves. As you hold the handle with your arms, your legs should drive away from the catch, propelling your body backward. It requires significant power and control in the lower-body muscles.

A strong core and elongated spine help maintain proper posture as your shoulders and arms pull the handle to your chest to complete the drive. A gentle return to the catch prepares you for the next drive. This full-body muscle engagement provides rowers with well-rounded musculature and overall fitness.

Low-Impact

Rowing provides an excellent, low-impact, high-intensity workout. Since your feet never entirely leave the pedal platform, you can strengthen muscles and enhance cardiovascular fitness while reducing impact. There is no jumping or bouncing, which makes rowing an ideal workout for those with joint, spine, or mobility issues.

High-Intensity

Don’t think that rowing is a breeze because you’re sitting down. When done correctly, rowing is a highly challenging sport! Rowing develops endurance and can be used to perform HIIT workouts, interval training, and power and strength conditioning.

Weight Loss and Maintenance

Rowing is more accessible to many exercisers than cardio, such as treadmill running, elliptical use, and cycling. It is low-impact and typically supports a higher max weight than other machines. Rowing engages the body’s large muscles, so you can burn many calories while rowing. Keep your heart rate at or above 60% of your maximum for the maximum burn.

Many new rowing machines also have programs or classes you can use on the monitor to keep you motivated and engaged throughout your rowing routine. The classic Concept2 rowers feature a fun boat game where you row against a virtual boat. A home rower is an excellent option for decreasing or maintaining weight because it is routine building.

Heart and Brain Health

When you exercise, your body releases several beneficial chemicals that support heart and brain health. The increased blood flow during exercise circulates oxygen and nutrients through your body.

Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, making us feel happy even after our session is over. The dopamine and norepinephrine release increases your motivation, focus, learning, and perception. Exercise also stimulates the production of BDNF, which protects and repairs brain neurons from injury and degeneration.

Rowing Has Protective Effects Against Disease and Illness

Because rowing gets your body’s large muscle groups moving repetitively for an extended period, it strengthens your heart and lungs. Cardiovascular exercise provides proven health benefits, from boosting your immune system to improving your cholesterol and reducing your risk of many chronic health conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my rower every day?

It is possible to use your rower every day. With any training, it is crucial to listen to your body and vary your level of training. If you’re going to use your rower every day, we don’t recommend pushing it to the max every day. Instead, try spacing out your harder or longer rowing sessions by mixing in less intense and shorter rowing workouts to avoid injury and burnout.

Is rowing better than cycling?

Both rowing and cycling are great low-impact activities that improve your cardiovascular strength. Rowing provides more of a full-body workout because it works out your lower body, core, and upper body. Cycling primarily works your lower body and can be more forgiving on the joints. Choose the more enjoyable activity that aligns with your goals.

Is rowing good or bad for knees?

Rowing builds the muscles in the legs, providing more support for the knee. It is also a low-impact exercise, so it won’t impact your knees like running, making it a good exercise for your knees.

Use proper form and start slow if you are new to rowing. If you have knee problems or are recovering from an injury, consult with your doctor before getting into rowing.

How long do rowing machines last?

Your rower can last for many years as long as it’s properly maintained and cared for. We’ve heard reports of the trusty Concept2 RowErg lasting 20+ years. The type of resistance and build quality might affect how long your rower lasts. Sturdier rowers with heavier weight capacities will most likely last longer.
