The UnSit treadmill by InMovement is an under desk walking treadmill designed specifically for office work spaces. This is not a converted gym treadmill! The UnSit is shorter and wider than traditional treadmills so it doesn’t extend out behind you in your office. The wider profile extends your walking room laterally while keeping the deck short and underneath you. Many walking treadmills extend out behind the person walking which can be a tripping hazard for others sharing the space. The UnSit has a 2.75 horsepower motor, is super quiet, and has an appropriate max speed of 2.0mph which is ideal for office environments. This under desk treadmill will cost you a little more out the door; it is priced at $2000 — which is a bit more than comparable models. Most under desk treadmills run between $1000 – $1200 for the treadmill alone and they will peak over $2000 with a desk included, but with InMovement you are getting a different size and quality that provides enhanced functionality and maintains necessary space in your office. For this reason, the UnSit is worth the price.

Our Video Review

Functionality

We were able to test the UnSit treadmill in our office. We evaluated it for different features, such as cushioning, noise output, feel underfoot and overall experience.

Cushioning

The UnSit provides enough cushioning underfoot so you can walk on it in different kinds of shoes. Unlike gym treadmills where most users will be wearing athletic shoes, those who use the UnSit in an office environment may be in casual business shoes or other shoes that can easily be slipped on and off. The cushioning in the deck matters more since footwear may not provide sufficient support.

We found the cushioning in the UnSit treadmill to be supportive with a gentle give under the deck to mitigate impact. Too much cushion could actually be counterproductive on a treadmill since users need good support for proper body mechanics. The thick deck and composite material provide necessary flex that would be sufficient for users of different sizes and weights. This treadmill would also work for different types of shoes. The cushioning also helps reduce foot noise while walking.

Noise Output

The UnSit is very quiet. InMovement has clearly engineered this treadmill to provide maximum comfort but minimal noise. You could use this treadmill in a shared office without disturbing those around you. The most we heard was a swishing noise as the belt moved along the surface of the deck. Foot impact noise was minimal and varied based on the weight of the user and the type of shoes being worn.
Feel Underfoot
The belt is lightly textured so even in slick office shoes you shouldn’t slip. The belt is also thicker than comparable belts which elongates the life of the belt and adds a softer feel underfoot. Quiet rollers at the base of the deck move the belt along smoothly. The step up height is a low 5 inches, which makes it easy to quickly step on and off the UnSit and the side rails are ribbed so if you step to the side you won’t slip here either.

Overall Experience

We found walking on the UnSit to be both comfortable and quiet. The shorter but wider frame makes this a great option for an under desk treadmill because you can move laterally and use the full width of your desk without stepping off the treadmill. The shorter overall length also makes it safer for shared spaces since you don’t have extra length extending behind you. We were impressed with the quality, build, feel and quiet operation of the UnSit.

Pros
  • Designed specifically for office use — this is not a converted gym treadmill
  • Silent when in use, so noise output won’t disturb those around you
  • Powerful 2.0 HP motor is self-cooling and supports unlimited hours of walking
  • 5” step up height makes it easy to get on and off
  • 2.75HP motor is both quiet and powerful for all-day walking
  • Has a safety feature that turns off the treadmill as soon as you step off it
  • Will only turn on for users over 70 pounds so children and pets cannot activate it accidentally
  • Two wheels under motor housing on the front end make it so you can tilt and roll the treadmill under your desk or out of the way when needed
Cons
  • This system does not include a desk – if you plan to use your own standing desk, make sure it is wide enough. InMovement sells a desk riser that sits on top of your existing desk to make it standing height.
  • Higher priced than comparable walking treadmills without a desk

UnSit under desk treadmill

In-depth Review of InMovement UnSit

Construction

Frame

The UnSit walking treadmill has a sturdy frame that was designed specifically to support the slower-pace, high-friction nature of walking for hours. Many walking treadmills are simply watered-down running treadmills with slower max speeds and a smaller motor. The UnSit however, has a 2.75 horsepower motor that can withstand the high-torque nature of walking for hours at slower speeds. Historically, office-based walking treadmills broke down quickly due to an inability to withstand this type of slow paced but continuous use. The wider walking surface helps to allow for natural lateral movement as you work at your desk. The treadmill weighs 162 pounds, so it is a solid treadmill, but wheels on the front end make it so you can tilt and roll the UnSit when needed.

Walking Surface

UnSit treadmill dimensions

The UnSit walking belt is 30” wide and 40” long which gives you plenty of room to move from side to side on your desk while still walking safely. Narrow treadmills often extend out behind the user with extra aft space that isn’t really usable and can be a trip hazard.

The UnSit treadmill comes fully assembled so you just slide it out of the box and you are ready to go. You will need to place your UnSit treadmill within reach of a dedicated wall outlet — it is recommended that the UnSit have its own dedicated outlet and not be plugged into a power strip with other devices.

Safety

The UnSit walking treadmill has been designed for safety in your home or work environment. The UnSit has two important safety features: it will automatically turn off when you step off it and it will not turn on unless the user weighs at least 70 pounds — this way it cannot be activated by a pet or small child. If you step away from your desk briefly and the UnSit pauses, it will not turn on if your child comes and stands on it while you are away. These features make it a good option for those who work at home and would like the benefits of walking while working, but have to be mindful of children, pets or other issues that could be a safety concern.

Motor

2.75 HP motor
The 2.75 horsepower motor is self-cooling and calibrated to run for unlimited walking hours. While other treadmills may offer higher walking speeds, the 2.0 mph max is perfect for standing at a desk. The motor is also virtually silent, there is a bit of noise as the belt slides across the deck, but the motor itself will not disturb you or those in close proximity. The UnSit also consumes half the power of comparable treadmills and is more reliable over time for both speed and durability.

Console Features

  • The UnSit console is a simple dial you turn to increase or decrease speed. The console sits on your desk for easy reach but takes up hardly any room.
  • For pedometer and other walking metrics, UnSit offers an app you can download on your phone which will sync to the machine to provide detailed information about how long, how far, and how many calories you burn while using the UnSit.
  • The UnSit app will sync with the FitBit and AppleHealth apps.
  • Specific metrics recorded by the app include:
    • Current speed
    • Average speed
    • Steps
    • Miles
    • Calories
    • Minutes walking
    • Minutes standing
    • Total UnSit Time
    • Calculations for each day, week, month and year

Performance

UnSit dimensions walking treadmill

As you can see, the UnSit is significantly wider and shorter than traditional treadmills. Most under desk treadmills are patterned after running treadmills with a narrow, but long running surface. This is because when you run you need more length to accommodate a longer stride. Walking requires a shorter stride length, which means much of this extended rear track space on a traditional treadmill is both wasted and dangerous.

The InMovement UnSit treadmill was designed specifically for an office environment. Most people use the full width of their desk as they move side to side, typing, writing, answering the phone, etc. The UnSit treadmill is therefore wider to allow for this lateral movement across your desk. Also, since it was designed to operate at slow speeds in an office environment, the InMovement UnSit is quiet, smooth, doesn’t overheat, can withstand hours of use, has a reasonable max speed, is calibrated to handle the high-friction and torque of slower walking speeds and uses an intuitive console interface. This treadmill is easy to use when at your standing desk and won’t disturb those working (or living) around you. This is not a piece of gym equipment someone dropped in the office — InMovement carefully designed the UnSit for your home or work space.

Storage

The InMovement UnSit weighs 162 pounds, which is slightly heavier than comparable walking treadmills. This is due to the reinforced frame construction and sturdy design. Two front mounted transport wheels make it easy to gently lift and roll for proper under-desk positioning. It is not recommended that the treadmill be routinely moved in and out of a closet or in and out of different offices. While it is well built, the treadmill works best when placed where you plan to use it and moved infrequently. A treadmill mat beneath the base is also recommended to protect both the treadmill and your floor surface. A mat also reduces vibrations and impact noise.

Desk Options:

The InMovement UnSit does not include a desk, however you can purchase a standing desk or desk riser separately from InMovement.

If you plan to use your own standing desk, make sure it has enough width to accommodate the UnSit. The UnSit treadmill is 40” wide, so a desk with at least 42” of width between the legs is recommended.

InMovement Standing Desk

InMovement does sell a standing desk you can get to fit over the top of the UnSit treadmill. This desk has the following specifications:

InMovement DT20 Desk Riser

This desk riser lifts straight up and down and has premium gas springs for effortless lifting. There is even a panel under the desk to hide clutter from cords or other wires.

Bottom Line:

The UnSit walking treadmill by InMovement is a cleverly designed under desk treadmill that takes advantage of space already dedicated to your work area and eliminates extra length behind you that is both unusable and dangerous. Typical walking treadmills are designed like running gym treadmills — they are long and narrow and designed for a running in a straight line with a full stride. The UnSit treadmill has been designed for walking only — and walking at your desk specifically. It has a 2.0 mile per hour max pace, which is about as fast as you can safely walk while working at your desk. The UnSit has a low profile step-up height of just 5 inches, so you can easily get on and off it. There are also safety features such as a pause sensor that will stop the machine as soon as you step off it and a weight sensor so the treadmill won’t start moving for anyone or anything under 70 pounds. This makes it especially good for home office situations where kids or pets may be around.

The UnSit console is an easy dial that you just turn up or down to modify pace. UnSit is Bluetooth enabled so it will sync with your phone to transmit your walking metrics to the UnSit app. You can keep track of distance, speed, time, pace, calories burned and your sessions over time (day, week, month, etc.) This information will also sync with FitBit or MyHealth apps as well.

InMovement also sells a desk riser which sits on your existing desk and accordions up to your desired height. This desk riser is wide enough to hold two monitors and has a lowered keyboard section as well as a panel to hide cords or wires that hang down beneath. The DT20 standing desk converter is another clever design by InMovement so you can turn any desk into a standing desk without having to buy new furniture.

We are impressed with this sturdy walking treadmill. The expanded width makes a big difference so you can use all the lateral width on your desk — and the reduced length makes it safer and easier to use in any office environment. The treadmill will not stick out behind you more than your chair would. So colleagues or peers who walk and work around you won’t trip over the under desk treadmill. Similarly, it has some valuable safety features for those who work at home.

If you are in the market for a quiet, powerful and well-engineered walking treadmill, take a look at the UnSit by InMovement!
