5. Best Folding Treadmill – Echelon Stride

Do you want to be able to fold your treadmill up so it rests against a wall? Or maybe drop it down behind a couch and out of sight? The Echelon Stride features a unique folding system that allows it to collapse down to just 10.25” in depth. The uprights and the console both fold flat against the deck so you can really reduce the footprint.

The open footprint is 69” long, 31” wide and 49” high. There isn’t a touchscreen, instead the Stride uses a panel that displays digital metrics with a tablet shelf in the middle. You can place your tablet in the center of the console and still see the metrics on either side. When finished, the uprights collapse down and the console will fold flat so it rests against the deck. When folded, the Stride is 69” long, still 31” wide, but folds down to just 10.25” high.

With a 12mph max speed and 10 levels of incline, the Echelon Stride provides impressive training variables. You can run, walk, or jog on this treadmill and it will support up to 300 pounds which is the same weight capacity we see on other, much larger treadmills. The Stride is a good option for users of all sizes and abilities who are looking for a compact treadmill that folds nearly flat.

6. Most Powerful Compact Treadmill – LifeSpan 5500i

Most Powerful Compact Treadmill - LifeSpan TR5500i Treadmill

We are impressed with the LifeSpan 5500i treadmill. This is a quiet, smooth treadmill with a higher-than-average top speed of 13.5mph. The 5500i measures 73” long by 35” wide and 55.5” high when it is open. As you fold the deck up to connect with the console, the 5500i folds to 40.5” long and 65.5” high.

LifeSpan has really designed an impressive, powerful treadmill that will fit in compact homes and apartments with the 5500i. The step up height to the deck is only nine inches high. Your top incline is 13% and unlike other compact treadmills, this one drops to -2% decline. Deck size is 22” wide and 60” long, so again you get more surface area on a compact footprint.

The deck is cushioned for comfort and the 4.0 horsepower motor provides plenty of speed. With compact treadmills, you often get a watered-down, underpowered treadmill as everything is dialed down to match the reduced size. This is not the case with the 5500i — this compact treadmill has the same size motor as the Nordictrack 2450 which is designed for long-distance running. You can get a lot of training out of the 5500i, it won’t overheat or wear out before you do.

The 10” console is not a video screen, you can’t watch videos here, but there are several screen options available. My personal favorite is the speedometer gauge screen that provides a real-time screen display of your speed. The 5500i includes 20 preset programs, with multiple fitness tests and heart rate programs as well.

LifeSpan covers the 5500i with a 10-year warranty on the frame and motor with 2 years of coverage for parts and 1 year for labor.

  • Low step up height of just 9 inches
  • Inclines to 13% and declines to -2%

7. Best Lightweight Compact Treadmill – ProForm City L6

Best Lightweight Treadmill - ProForm City L6 Treadmill

Another brand new treadmill on our list this year is the ProForm City L6 treadmill. This compact treadmill is very similar to the Echelon Stride with collapsible uprights and a console that folds down directly against the deck. This is probably the smallest treadmill on our list and offers a great option to those who want to walk safely in the comfort of their own home. The City L6 is only 29” Wide x 70” Deep x 44” High when fully open but collapses down to just the height of the deck high when fully folded. The 17.5” L x 45” W walking surface is slightly smaller than others on our list, so we recommend this for petite users or those who just plan to walk. Larger users and runners may not have enough span.

As treadmill engineering has advanced in the last few years, we’ve seen some impressive innovations and the new Echelon Stride and City L6 offer features that haven’t been previously available on fully functional treadmills. This collapsible console will hold your tablet for you while you workout or you can use the simple metric display that relays your time and distance at a glance.

For those with limited space, the new ProForm City L6 offers features that make it possible to get your workout done at home when you need it. College students, those with roommates, owners in small apartments and anyone with limited space will appreciate the collapsible City L6 frame. Check it out for more details!

8. Best Treadmill for Seniors – LifeSpan TR2000e

Best Treadmill For Seniors - LifeSpan TR2000e Treadmill

We love the design of the LifeSpan TR2000e. This is not only a compact treadmill, it features the eFold Electric Folding System, so the treadmill will fold and unfold on its own. All you have to do is press a button and stand back to watch! The LifeSpan TR2000e is 71” long x 33” wide x 56” high when open. The folded footprint is 50” long, 33” wide, and 56” high.

This treadmill is ideal for small homes or those who want a quality treadmill that will sit politely in the corner and not take up much room. It is also our most recommended treadmill for seniors because of its thoughtful features. The step-up height on the 2000e is only 8” so it is easy to get on and off. It is a good option for anyone with mobility issues or those who want a quiet, comfortable treadmill since it has 8 compression shocks under the deck for added cushioning.

You still get a good-sized walking surface on the TR2000e. Even though it has a smaller frame, the belt is still 20” wide and 56” long. The 20” of width is perfect for walking and the 56” in length is an inch longer than other compact treadmills that are often 55” long. This may not be ideal for tall runners, but anyone walking a moderate pace will have plenty of room. You can also jog comfortably with good motor support and plenty of space. The TR2000e also has a max speed of 11mph and will incline to 15% – which puts this treadmill on par with some high-ranking rivals! The quiet 2.5hp motor is responsive and provides smooth incline and decline adjustments so you don’t have to hold onto the handrails when the incline or speed changes.

LifeSpan has kept the console of the TR2000e simple with a 6” blue backlit display. It has heart rate sensors on the handles and comes with 2 custom heart rate programs. The Intelli-Guard system adds an important safety feature where the belt turns off after 20 seconds once you stop walking. This way the belt won’t continue to run in the background if no one is on the machine.

We are impressed with the 10-year warranty on the frame and motor as well, making this a quality investment. This is by far one of our favorite compact, folding treadmills!

11. Honorable Mention – LifeSpan TR650 Treadmill

LifeSpan TR650 Treadmill

The LifeSpan TR650 Slim Foldable Treadmill is just that – slim and foldable! It has a very low profile and it folds up so the uprights and console collapse onto the deck. This makes this treadmill perfect for those looking for a compact treadmill for their home. The TR650 is an entry-level treadmill in LifeSpan’s line-up of home treadmills. We are impressed by the very affordable price tag and 10-year frame warranty that it comes with.

In addition to being compact, the TR650 is pretty lightweight at 95 lbs. There are two front transport wheels for when you need to move it, too. We recommend the LifeSpan TR650 for walking only. The motor is 1.5 HP. Although it goes up to 10 mph we don’t suggest using this treadmill at that speed, at least not for long. The motor size is best for lighter use and walking. Plus, the deck is 17” wide by 47” long so most users probably won’t have enough space to comfortably run anyway.

The LifeSpan TR650 handles users up to 220 pounds. So, users up to that capacity should be able to use this treadmill. The console is simple, foldable, and comes with some preset programs if you want to follow along with a workout format. The console has minimal navigation buttons for a streamlined look and 3 LED window displays to show your distance/calories, time, and speed. On top of the console is a device holder for you to place your phone or tablet to watch whatever you want, too.

  • The console and uprights fold onto the deck for easy storing.
  • The motor and deck supports walking and users up to 220 lbs.
  • The console has a 3 LED window display and preprogrammed workouts for guided training.
  • This treadmill is at an affordable price point.
  • There are lubrication ports to easily maintain the treadmill and ensure the belt stays lubricated.

12. WalkingPad X21 Treadmill

WalkingPad X21 Treadmill

To finish out our list of best compact treadmills, we have the WalkingPad X21 Double-Fold Treadmill. We love the folding mechanism on this treadmill. When you’re not using it, the X21’s deck folds in half and then folds again at the top of the motor hood to stand up under the uprights and console. The uprights are completely vertical and the WalkingPad X21 is meant to be stored folded in half and upright. The 90-degree vertical folding makes it perfect to push over to the side of a wall, out of the way.

When unfolded the X21 is 39.6” high, 27.99” wide, and 55.9” long. Folded it is 39.6” high, 27.99” wide, and 8.86” long. It’s impressive that it tucks the 56” of length all the way down to 9”! The running surface is 18.1” wide and 47.6” long so we recommend it for walking. Some users might be able to very slowly jog, but this deck length isn’t long enough to support most full running strides. The max speed only goes up to 7.45 mph or 12 kph, so you won’t be able to go very fast anyways.

The uprights, handle, and console are sleek and remain upright when in use and when the treadmill is folded. They provide balance support when you need it, but are minimal. I really like how streamlined the console is. It consists of an LED digital display that extends almost the entire width of the treadmill. This shows your time, speed, distance, and calories. There is also a large dial in the center for adjusting your speed which is pretty cool and intuitive. You can also use the detachable device holder to stream content from your phone or tablet while using the WalkingPad X21 Treadmill.

  • The deck folds in half and again at the top of the deck to be stored upright only taking up about 9” of length.
  • It is perfect to set against a wall, out of the way when you’re not using it.
  • The deck and motor are best for walking and lighter use.
  • The LED digital display console is sleek and features a dial to adjust the speed.
  • The treadmill only weighs 93 lbs.

  • There is no incline function.
  • This treadmill only goes up to 7.45 mph and isn’t best for heavier use and running.

  • Double Folding Technology
  • Folded Footprint: 39.6″ H x 27.99” W x 8.86” L
  • Unfolded Footprint: 39.6” H x 27.99” W x 55.9” L

  • Weight Capacity: 240 lbs
  • Max Speed: 7.45 MPH
  • Brushless Motor
  • ABS + Aluminum Alloy Construction

Compact Treadmill — Buyer’s Guide

As you consider the treadmills we have listed on our best compact treadmills review, you may not be sure why they were selected to be part of this list.

Well, for one thing, all of these treadmills are on the more affordable side of things, as treadmill manufacturers tend to make their entry-level and mid-range treadmills on the smaller side. More expensive treadmills built with commercial-grade materials are generally larger and may or may not be able to fold.

So, to make our list, some of the basics of a good compact treadmill are:

  • Dimensions in-use and folded – The quickest way to rule out an unsuitable treadmill is to check its measurements. If you have ever read customer reviews on treadmills, one of the major things they mention is that they weren’t expecting the treadmill to be so big.
Well, as we sorted through the machines, we immediately ruled out larger treadmills and ones that did not fold. With the ability to fold, it is far easier to bring a treadmill into your home, as it will not always have the deck down and in the way.
  • Quality construction
There are plenty of cheap treadmills out there from manufacturers that no one has ever heard of before you stumble across them. These treadmills are hardly worth the time to build as they will shake, vibrate, and fall apart within months if not weeks of your purchase.
Rather than purchasing a lemon of a treadmill, we have selected only treadmills from reputable companies that stand by their products. These treadmills will hold up under daily usage, and come with helpful warranties to help protect your investment.
  • Treadmill belt length  – There is a careful balance between the treadmill belt and the compact size of the treadmill. With a larger belt, you will have more room to work out, but you also will have a larger treadmill to accommodate the greater amount of running room.
With the treadmills we have selected, we have done our best to balance the treadmill belt area with the desire to have a compact treadmill. Most users should be comfortable on the treadmills we selected, but those who are over 6’ tall, the treadmill belts that are 55” long or shorter may not find them as comfortable.
  • Range of features  – Along with choosing a compact treadmill, it is better when the treadmill comes with a certain amount of quality features. Even for treadmills that are usually pretty streamlined when it comes to features, the compact treadmill you choose should offer some basic solid features such as easy controls, fans, built-in workout programs, workout data, and more.
Using these qualities as our starting criteria, we were able to sort through the various brands of treadmills and choose the best compact treadmills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are folding treadmills sturdy?

Yes, folding treadmills can be really sturdy depending on their size and overall construction. Usually larger treadmills with heavier weight capacities are going to be more sturdy than others. Belts that fold up, rather than consoles and uprights that fold down flat are going to be more stable, too.

What should I look for in a compact treadmill?

First you want to determine how you want to use the treadmill and what size space you have for it. If you need one that folds flat and can be stored under a bed, know that it will have less functionality than one’s that have belts that fold up out of the way.

It’s important to look at the treadmill’s weight capacity, deck length, and motor size to determine if it’s right for you and your needs.

What is the smallest treadmill available?

The ProForm City L6 and Echelon Stride are the smallest treadmills on our Best Compact Treadmills list. They also both fold flat rather than the deck folding up like the other treadmills on our list.

Can you run on small treadmills?

We recommend getting a treadmill with at least a 60” long running surface and a 3.0+ HP motor. These specs are best for most users to run comfortably on a treadmill. Some users with shorter running strides might be able to use 55” long deck sizes though.
