The more I walk and run, the more these habits take over my life and home. My closet is full of athletic clothes, and I have piles of sneakers. I don’t have an unlimited amount of space to contribute to my cardio pursuits, so while a treadmill is great, I need one that fits in a compact area.

As a treadmill reviewer, I am constantly enchanted by the large cardio behemoths with advanced training features, mega touchscreens, and sturdy, non-folding frames. They are phenomenal—when they aren’t located in the middle of my living room, monopolising the entire space. Instead, most of us likely need a more practical, folding treadmill.

Still, there are things that you don’t want to sacrifice when purchasing a folding treadmill. You (and I) still want nice features, a great training experience, and a good value for your money. Keep reading to find out what we recommend after years of treadmill testing.

  • 0 to 12 mph; 0 to 12% incline

Areas For Improvement:
  • Limited features without iFIT
  • Louder incline noise
Needing a compact treadmill doesn’t mean you need a tiny treadmill. Sometimes, it’s enough to have a treadmill that’s practical to fold and unfold with every use. I like the NordicTrack T Series 10 because it’s great for running, and the deck is light enough that I don’t mind folding it up even when I’m exhausted. It also has a hydraulic arm to allow the deck to unfold softly.

One of the unique things about the T Series 10 is its adjustable cushioning. I don’t notice a huge difference when the cushioning is “off” and “on,” but I like the cushioned underfoot feel. The 20” x 60” running deck is soft, and I have plenty of space to run. However, I caution runners who are running high mileage on the treadmill daily—the T Series 10 has only a 3 HP motor and is best for lower mileage.

iFIT is critical for your experience on the T Series 10. NordicTrack pushes the training service hard, and if you don’t subscribe to iFIT, you might not enjoy your experience on this treadmill as much. iFIT provides thousands of outdoor training classes with automatic speed and incline adjustments.

The NordicTrack T Series 10 is 75.1” long, 34.3” wide, and 58.4” tall. It weighs 250 lbs (in box) and has a 325-lb weight capacity. I recommend it for anyone looking for a compact walking and running treadmill with soft cushioning and a premium training service.

  • 12% max incline and 12 mph max speed
  • Well-constructed
  • Moderate cushioning
Areas For Improvement:
  • Unlock before first use
  • Louder incline

The ProForm Carbon TLX is a true compact running treadmill. It has much of what we love from ProForm, all without a touchscreen. We promise you won’t miss it. Instead, enjoy iFIT on your phone or stream whatever you want.

The TLX’s 3.0 HP motor and 60” deck make it ideal for running. It isn’t the most powerful treadmill on this list, but it’s one of the more affordable options in its class. The deck supports all stride lengths, so this treadmill is for runners who want to log some miles inside.

With moderate cushioning that feels neither too soft nor too firm, most people will be fond of running on this budget-friendly, well-constructed treadmill. It also features plenty of speed and incline to challenge most.

The roughly 74” long dimensions make it less compact than others on this list, but the easy-to-fold-up deck helps reduce the overall floor space it occupies when not in use.

If you’re looking to save on money and space while still being able to run, the ProForm Carbon TLX is a great choice. Although we love a few other budget running treadmills on this list, too, we like using this one with iFIT on our device.

What We Like:
  • Very affordable!
  • Great for walking
  • 300 lb weight limit
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Quiet and responsive motor
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Included workout programs
Areas For Improvement:
  • Less tech than others
  • No wireless heart rate tracking
The Horizon T101 is a favorite of ours because of its size, weight, and price. In terms of construction, size, and price, the T101 is better than most treadmills in its price range. The T101 is well under $1000.

The T101’s compact size and excellent price are awe-worthy. Although most can only walk and lightly jog on the 20” x 55” deck, some people can run on it, too. The belt moves up to 10 mph, and the deck inclines up to 10%, so you can work up a great sweat on this little treadmill!

The console is pretty simple. It has no streaming options from the LED windows, but there are six workout modes to vary your training. The device rack also makes watching content from your phone or tablet convenient. The T101 is a good option for parking in front of your TV when you want to zone out and walk, too.

This small treadmill is just that: compact. Its lightweight frame of 180 lbs makes it suitable for use on an upper-level story. You’ll probably need some help getting it up the stairs, but if you only need to move the T101 from room to room or around in the same room, it’s pretty easy.

If you’re looking for a compact treadmill for walking, consider the Horizon T101. It’s an easy-to-use fold-up treadmill that’s a great deal at a steal of a price, and it has a lifetime frame and motor warranty.

What We Like:
  • Quiet motor for running
  • Compact
  • Folds flat and stores upright
  • Streams trainer-led workouts and streaming apps like Netflix with a subscription
  • Long deck to support all stride lengths
  • 12.4 mph max speed and 12 levels of incline
  • Convenient roller adjustment dials
  • No assembly required
Areas For Improvement:
  • Requires a subscription to purchase
  • The Content isn’t quite at the same quality as other subscriptions
  • The console is a little shaky while running

The Echelon Stride-6s is unique to most compact treadmills we’ve tested. The console and touchscreen collapse onto the deck to roll this treadmill under a tall bed (over 12” high) or store it upright.

The Stride-6s doesn’t just take up less floor space, but it is the kind of treadmill you can run on and then move completely out of the way and even out of sight if you have a larger closet to roll it into.

The Echelon is also an entertaining treadmill to use because of its subscription training content. The content is a big reason to buy this treadmill, and a monthly subscription is required when purchasing the Stride-6s.

Trainer-led workouts, racing features, and third-party streaming apps are available on the 10” touchscreen. The workouts are good for guidance when you need it. Who doesn’t like the idea of walking or running while watching their favorite show on Netflix?

One impressive aspect of this treadmill is its quiet 3.0 HP motor. The Stride-6s is already built for upper-level floors and apartments (if your lease allows you to use a treadmill). The quiet motor helps this one not be so disruptive to others.

What We Like:
  • Heavy-duty and made long distances
  • Powerful 4.25 CHP
  • iFIT on the 16” pivoting touchscreen
  • Streaming apps with an iFIT subscription
  • Soft deck cushioning
  • Inclines 12% and declines -3%
  • For all abilities
  • Automatic adjusting with iFIT
Areas For Improvement:
  • Less screen functionality without iFIT
  • Larger and heavier than others on this list

This next treadmill isn’t as compact or lightweight as others on this list, but with everything it offers packed into its space-saving design, we felt compelled to include it. Most often, higher-powered treadmills require more space.

While the NordicTrack 1750 requires a little more room in your home, its impressive features and construction make its size worth it. The motor is quiet and powerful enough to handle heavy use, like distance training for races and households with multiple users.

The deck folds up and features the softest cushioning for your joints. If you want to feel refreshed after running on a treadmill, this one is a great option. We like the deck cushioning for recovery runs, and we recommend it to people with joint sensitivity.

All of the 1750’s features aren’t complete without a subscription to iFIT. iFIT features thousands of trainer-led workouts, streaming apps like Netflix, and automatic adjustability with the speed and incline. You can use it without iFIT, but we highly recommend considering iFIT to get the most out of this treadmill.

The 1750 goes up to 12 mph, inclines up to 12%, and declines to -3% for plenty of training options. If you have a little extra room but still need a space-saving treadmill with a folding deck, we highly encourage you to consider the 1750.

  • Quiet, quick-adjusting motor

  • Pairs with Apple and Samsung watches
Areas For Improvement:
  • Weak fan
  • Not for heavy training
The Horizon 7.0 AT is an underrated gem with a heart of gold. From the moment we each ran on it, we were impressed. It’s quiet, great for interval training, and well-priced. While we don’t recommend it for distance training, you’ll get your money’s worth on it.

The 7.0 AT isn’t the most tech-innovative or sleek-looking treadmill, but it doesn’t require a subscription and pairs with plenty of apps such as Peloton, Zwift, Apple Health, and Kinomap. The simple console has onboard workout programs and sweet blue roller adjustment dials to reach the speeds and inclines you want.

The motor is also responsive, making it fun for interval training. You never have to wait for the motor to adjust for your next interval, leaving you to focus on your workout. It’s also quiet, so feel free to use it in most spaces.

In addition to its user-friendly and slim design and quiet motor, it’s covered with a lifetime warranty. We appreciate Horizon’s coverage of an affordable treadmill. The foldable deck also makes it convenient for multi-use rooms. The frame is functional for a 76” long treadmill.

The 7.0 AT also has lovely deck cushioning. Compared to the treadmills we tested, it’s fairly soft, making it great for those with joint problems. So, if you’re looking for a compact, comfortable, and affordable treadmill for running, we recommend the Horizon 7.0 AT.

What We Like:
  • Budget-friendly
  • Solid construction
  • Long deck for running
  • Included onboard workouts
  • Bluetooth speakers and device rack
  • Lifetime warranty
Areas For Improvement:
  • Kick release system
  • Weak fan
Another excellent and well-priced compact running treadmill is the Sole F63. When testing Sole’s treadmills, we found them to be stable, quiet, and heavy-duty yet easy to move. The F63 weighs 224 lbs, but it has multiple wheels to push it around fairly easily. It is smaller, taking up less space while still providing plenty of room to run.

Although we wish the F63 had the release handle like the previous version instead of the kick release system to unfold it, this treadmill is still easy to store. You lift the back of the deck up. To unfold, you push your foot against the bar under the deck, and it will lower slowly.

A bit more robust than some of the other compact treadmills on this list, the F63 has a very solid deck with firm cushioning. If you’re a road runner, you’ll appreciate running on this one because it feels like cement. There is shock absorption to help lessen the impact on your joints, unlike cement.

The Sole F63 has a simple console with onboard workout programs, HIIT, cardio, fat burn, strength, and manual mode. You can also pair the F63 with your phone to use the Sole+ app for free trainer-led content. This app is free to use when purchasing a Sole machine; you need the serial number.

Sole helps to instill confidence in the construction and performance of the F63 with the lifetime frame and motor warranty.

What We Like
  • Very compact
  • Double folds up
  • Ten mph max speed
  • For walking, jogging, and light running
  • Lightweight for upper-level floors
  • 300-lb weight limit
Areas For Improvement:
  • Not made for long-distance training
  • Doesn’t incline
The WalkingPad X25 is the smallest treadmill on this list, but it is the most heavy-duty from WalkingPad. If you’re looking for a tiny treadmill that you can actually jog and run on, this one is it. It is the most compact treadmill we recommend for light running.

The X25 weighs just 104 lbs, and it double-folds. The deck folds in half, and then it folds again at the top of the deck under the handle and console to store it upright. You can easily roll this treadmill against the wall, out of the way. You can also lay it under a tall bed or couch. It’s only 10” tall when folded and laid down.

Now, this WalkingPad isn’t the most heavy-duty treadmill. It isn’t meant for distance training, but its convenient design means you can use it on upper-level floors and in places like apartments and condos.

The X25 is simple to use. It features an LED console built into the handle. There’s a large dial on the console to adjust the speed. The X25 doesn’t incline, but it goes up to 10 mph. This is a 6-minute mile running pace, a quick pace for such a small treadmill.

The deck is 52” long, so it won’t support every running stride length, but it will be long enough for most. Plus, shortening your stride is always an option if you want to run indoors but don’t have room for a larger treadmill.

Walking pads from the brand and off-brands on Amazon are all the rage. However, the WalkingPad X25 is one of the few you can run on.

  • Hydraulic-assisted folding frame
  • 20” x 60” running surface
  • 0 to 12 mph; 0 to 12% incline
  • Netflix, Prime Video, Spotify, and more
Areas For Improvement:
  • Limited features without iFIT
  • Short (2-year) motor warranty
The ProForm Carbon Pro 9000 measures 73.2” long, 34.5” wide, and 60.7” tall, but it folds to reduce its footprint to just over 40” long. It weighs 249 lbs (in box), but I don’t find it too difficult to tilt and move around.

With a 16” touchscreen designed for iFIT, you’ll need a membership to the training platform to access most of the content. iFIT has trainer-led classes that are filmed outdoors, allowing you to explore trails and distant locales from your home. The speed and incline adjust automatically according to the class preset, SmartAdjust, or ActivePulse.

SmartAdjust tailors the speed and incline to your fitness level by remembering your past performances. ActivePulse adjusts the treadmill based on your heart rate when you have a Bluetooth monitor paired to keep you in the right heart rate zone for the workout.

I recommend the ProForm Carbon Pro 9000 for runners, given its 3.6 CHP motor, 20” x60” running surface, and nice speed and incline range.

What We Like:
  • Compact folding design
  • Small footprint
  • Lightweight and easy to transport
  • No subscription required
  • Supports some running
  • Budget-friendly
Areas For Improvement:
  • Folding mechanism requires Allen key
  • Not ideal for high running mileage
Though this is the compact treadmills list, there are a lot of “full-sized” folding treadmills. Few treadmills can replicate what a large running treadmill can do in a small space. The DeerRun A1 Pro is much smaller than the average treadmill. It can even be stored flat, and it’s no problem to move around.

The A1 Pro’s dimensions are 54.1” long, 24.1” wide, and 42.3” tall. When folded flat, it’s only 8” tall, allowing it to fit under furniture. You can even store it upright to fit it in a closet. Since it weighs only 86 lbs, it’s not hard to do. Yet, you can run on the A1 Pro. I even ran 10+ miles on it during testing!

While some runners won’t be able to run on the A1 Pro because the deck is only 44” long, some of you will be able to. It has a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour and a 3.0 HP motor. You can change the incline from 0% to 6%. It adjusts manually, so it is not good for intervals.

Since the A1 Pro is quite compact and affordable, I recommend it for those of you on a tight budget and with the smallest spaces.

What To Consider When Buying A Compact Treadmill

Before picking a small treadmill for your home, we recommend considering the following.

How much room do you have?

Considering a treadmill’s dimensions is important. By measuring how much room you have, you can determine if the treadmill you’re eyeing will fit. Along with the treadmill’s dimensions, we recommend factoring in a few feet surrounding the treadmill to ensure you’ll have enough room to use it. You’ll want to keep the rear of the deck fairly clear for safety.

Also, regarding space, what floor do you want to use your treadmill on? Is it an upper-level room? An apartment with no elevator access? Some treadmills are heavier than others, so you’ll want to keep the treadmill’s weight in mind, too. You can find the treadmill’s dimensions and weight on the manufacturer’s website and in our reviews here at TRG.

What kind of compact treadmill do you need?

We’ve included a variety of compact treadmills on our list above because there are many types. Most small treadmills have foldable decks, but some collapse flat, and others store so compactly that you can shove them away in a closet or under a bed. You want to think of the type of treadmill that will most benefit your home.

Typically, considering the deck size of the treadmill will help determine what you can do on it. 60” long decks are best for all users’ running strides. 55” is spacious enough for walking and jogging, although if you have a shorter stride, you can probably run on decks of this size, like some of our team members.

Decks under 50” are ideal for walking. Some people, like a few of our team members, can lightly run on mini-treadmills with these deck lengths.

What is your budget?

Powerful, heavy-duty treadmills are often priced higher than those that handle just walking. Our list above includes budget-friendly options that can still support running, so if you need to save in price and not only space, we have you covered.

Do you want entertainment while you exercise?

Subscription training content is readily available on most treadmills nowadays. Long gone are the days of the “dreadmill,” where it feels like you’re watching paint dry while you run. Many treadmills come with touchscreens equipped with training videos and even streaming apps like Netflix. Even treadmills with simple consoles and no trainer-led content often pair with training apps on your device.

The best small treadmill is the one that you’ll use, so while this might not seem important now, training and entertainment content can help keep you consistent with your treadmill training. And if you prefer zoning out, you’ll probably want a straightforward treadmill console without all the bells and whistles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you run on compact treadmills?

Compact treadmills come in different sizes. Most people will need a 60” deck to run comfortably, especially at higher speeds close to 10-12 mph. Treadmills with this deck length take up more room than treadmills with shorter decks, so keep that in mind. Many people can jog, if not run, on decks 55” long, but not everyone will have enough room—specifically those with long strides.

What should I look for in a compact treadmill?

When looking for a small treadmill, you should consider your budget, training goals, and home space. You want to be sure that the treadmill will fit where you plan on using it and that you can use it safely.

You also want to pick one that aligns with what you plan on doing on it. This means checking the deck length to ensure you have enough room to walk and run (if that is your goal) and considering the treadmill’s training capabilities and motor. Your budget is also important. Just because you’re looking for a treadmill doesn’t mean you can’t find a quality one that fits your budget.

What is the smallest treadmill available?

WalkingPad treadmills are some of the smallest we’ve tested. We have included the WalkingPad X25 as the smallest treadmill on our best compact treadmills list. Because of its size, weight, and storage capabilities, it is the kind of treadmill you can use in an apartment. It is best for walking and light jogging, although it might be too small for some people to comfortably jog and run on.
